Swimming Pool Chemicals Part Three-Shock
Anytime a pool is getting heavy use chlorine levels will drop as free chlorine combines with contaminants and forms chloramines. Chloramines cause that heavy ?chlorine? smell any swimmer knows and loves. Though attributed to too much chlorine it?s actually the best indicator that chlorine is way too low! The pool needs a big dose of chlorine right away or bad things will happen. This is where pool shock comes to the rescue. Designed to add lots of chlorine in just minutes shock products are often the same stuff you use day to day but in a different form. There are two kinds of shocks; chlorine based and non-chlorine. Each is useful but in different situations.
Chlorine shock
Chlorine shock comes in three forms; calcium hypchlorite (Cal Hypo), sodium dichlor ()Dichlor) or lithium hypochlorite(Lithium). Cal hypo and dichlor were discussed in Part One of this series as regular sanitizers. Lithium hypochlorite is only used as a shocking agent. In each of these products the chlorine molecule is carried or bound to a different substance; lithium, sodium or calcium. Lithium and sodium dissolve nicely in pool water, calcium doesn?t so lithium and dichlor can be added directly to a pool while calcium should be dissolved in a bucket of water before adding. If not pre-dissolved Cal Hypo will settle to the bottom and bleach lots of nice little white spots on a vinyl liner.
A shocking agent is meant to be a quick fix. The chlorine level is raised to a level as high as 10 ppm (parts per million), too high for swimming. Since unstabilized chlorine is quickly burned out by sunlight, cal hypo and lithium are nice shock agents as they are both unstabilized. Dichlor, however, is stabilized and will hang around for up to six hours. Dichlor is fine but don?t plan on using the pool for a while.
Dichlor and Cal Hypo both pack a powerful punch with 56 and 65 percent available chlorine respectively. Lithium usually provides 35 percent and is a relatively weak sister requiring a heavier dose for the same results.
All three shocks are available in convenient 1 lb. pouches or in pails up to 50 lbs. Cal hypo is the cheapest and most popular, lithium the most expensive and least used. Dichlor is mid priced and widely available. All three types require the pool to be closed until chlorine levels drop below 3 ppm.
Non Chlorine shock
A relatively new development, non-chlorine shock has proved to be a popular choice with many pool owners primarily because the pool can stay open for use even after shock is added. Pretty cool, huh?
Sort of. Non-chlorine shock, as one might expect, contains no chlorine. If chlorine is what a pool needs how does this stuff do any good? The active ingredient in non-chlorine shock is potassium monopersulfate or PMP. It has little if any oxidizing potential but it does do something pretty neat. PMP actually frees chlorine bound up in chloramine compounds and makes it available to sanitize again. And the pool can stay open while this miraculous process takes place. There is a catch. Often after prolonged summer use pool water has little or no chlorine or chloramines. Sunlight and bather load has used up almost everything. Adding non-chlorine shock at this point will do nothing because the PMP has nothing to work with. Make sure to take a total chlorine reading before using non-chlorine shock. If total chlorine is low use a shock containing chlorine.
Using Shock Properly
-Regardless of the type used it?s best to add shock when people are done using the pool for the day. The overnight hours are best because unstabilized chlorine will last longer. Remember to run that filter.
-Always try to verify that shocking your pool has pushed chlorine levels to at least 5 ppm. Lower concentrations won?t do a proper job and could lead to trouble.
-It?s good practice to pre-dissolve shock before adding to the pool even if it?s lithium or dichlor. Always add shock to water NOT water to shock.
-Remember, non-chlorine shock WILL NOT WORK if chlorine levels are too low.

Swimming Pool Chemicals Part Two-Algaecides
You return from vacation and the pool has turned green, slimy and cloudy. The day after a big, all day party the pool has gone cloudy with that nasty hint of green. Every pool owner knows when algae gets going in the pool. Every pool owner also knows that only an algaecide will kill the pest and let the pool return to pristine condition. So after a quick trip to the pool store or garage you add algaecide and hope for the best. But wait, what IS an algaecide? What are you putting in the water with such high hopes?
Algaecides are chemicals that kill algae as opposed to sanitizers like chlorine that prevent algae and bacteria from getting a foothold in the first place. Algaecides are the last line of defense to prevent draining a pool and starting over. Although the brand names and claims are numerous there are really only two kinds of algaecide available today; metallic and quaternary ammonias. Though both types can be very effective they have different characteristics. Choosing the right algaecide is key to getting the problem solved and swimming again.
Metallic Algaecides Great for winter closing and algae blooms.
The very earliest types of pool algaecide were copper based. Copper is a proven killer and is extremely effective. Copper, either as copper sulfate or elemental copper is suspended in a carrier liquid (water) by a chemical called triethanolamine and added to pool water. Copper concentrations vary from 1 to 7 percent depending on type. Though as effective as any of the newer types of algaecide copper has drawbacks: it can stain pool hardware and turn hair green if chlorine concentrations are too high. It also builds up over time and continued use can stain even a properly balanced pool.
Silver based algaecide is also available. Used to suppress algae and bacteria in electricity-generating fuel cells on space craft, silver algaecide capitalized on use by NASA to win pool customers. Silver algaecide does work but much more slowly than copper. Along with the drawbacks associated with copper algaecides, silver based algae killers are as expensive as, well, silver!
Quaternary Ammonia (Quats) Great for maintenance and algae blooms.
Quaternary ammonia based disinfectants are everywhere; hospitals, nursing homes, restaurants, day care centers and???.swimming pools! Very effective as surface disinfectants at concentrations as low as 2.5 percent, most pool algaecides use a concentration of 30 percent to as high as 60 percent. The main drawback to quaternary ammonia algaecides is foaming. Added to pool water the agitation provided by the pool pump is enough for the algaecide to add nice suds to a pool. Not nice to look at but not a real problem. Quats are relatively inexpensive and a good anytime algaecide if a little foam isn?t a bother.
Polyquats are a refinement of quat algaecides and eliminate the foaming problem entirely. Available in concentrations as high as 60 percent they do the job perfectly but at prices approaching $30 per quart a little foaming might not look so bad. The high price might also be because there is only one U.S. manufacturer!
Low foaming quats are a compromise. Significantly less money than polyquats the foam problem is greatly minimized at a price that makes more sense to many pool owners. Low foam quats are very effective.
Using algaecides
-Always add algaecide first. Let it work overnight before shocking. Chlorine will oxidize and destroy the algaecide if added too soon. If the algaecide is metallic staining is an additional reason to wait.
-Check the ingredients. Look for the active ingredients; copper, ammonia etc. Also check the active percentage. If it?s below 30 percent look elsewhere. In particular avoid gallon jugs of algaecide. Generally this bargain stuff has only 5-10 percent active ingredients and will actually cost more to do the same job.
-Spread the algaecide as evenly as possible around the perimeter of the pool. Better distribution means faster action.
-Don?t overdose. More is NOT better especially if using a metallic algaecide.

Swimming Pool Chemicals Part One - Just What Am I Putting In My Pool?
Swimming Pool Chemicals Part One
As owner and operator of a retail site selling pools and everything to do with pools and spas I am constantly amazed by the need for information on many of the basic products used by pool owners. Since chemicals are a universal, this and subsequent articles will hopefully give pool owners a better idea of what they?re putting in their pools and how it will perform.
Chlorine is still King of Sanitizers for swimming pools. Chlorine and its relative Bromine are members of the halogen family of chemical elements. Halogens share the characteristic of being powerful oxidizers, which makes them ideal for swimming pools and spas. The oxidizing property breaks apart chemical contaminants from swimmers and the environment making the pool unattractive for infestation by algae and bacteria. Having said this swimming pool chlorine is available in a number of different forms each possessing unique properties. This article will discuss each popular type.
Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is a liquid form of chlorine identical to the bleach used for laundry but in a more concentrated form. Laundry bleach usually provides 4-5 percent available chlorine while pool bleach is 10 percent or a little more. Bleach isn?t a very good pool product compared to other types of chlorine available today. It?s expensive; chorine in other forms delivers 56 to 90 percent available chlorine compared to 10 percent for bleach. Bleach also has a pH of over 13. This will tend to raise the pool pH unless pH reducer is added regularly. Bleach is unstabilized and easily broken down by the UV rays in sunlight. Once added to the pool it will be gone in about 2 hours. Bleach may also add dissolved solids that can make pool water cloudy and unattractive. Given the drawbacks and availability of better sources of chlorine bleach shouldn?t be an option for use in a swimming pool.
Calcium Hypochlorite (Cal Hypo) is usually sold in granular form although tablets are available, typically for use in septic systems. Cal Hypo is most commonly found in 1 lb. bags sold as pool shock. Cal Hypo provides a healthy 65 percent available chlorine but as it is unstabilized sunlight quickly burns it out. If used as a regular source of chlorine, stabilizer (cyanuric acid) is usually added to the pool to keep the Cal Hypo from disappearing so quickly. Cal Hypo makes an effective shocking agent because it does its job and quickly disappears. There are several drawbacks to Calcium Hypochlorite. It is the most powerful oxidizer (Class II) available for pool owners and the most dangerous to store and handle. It can react explosively when mistakenly mixed with other chlorine products. It must also be pre-dissolved before use to avoid bleaching out vinyl liners.
Sodium Dichlor (Dichlor) is always sold as a granular product and provides 56 percent available chlorine. Typically more expensive than other forms it doesn?t lend itself well to automatic feeders and provides a little less bang for the buck in available chlorine. On the plus side it is a Class 1 oxidizer and somewhat less dangerous to handle than other forms of chlorine especially bleach and Cal Hypo. It also makes an excellent shocking agent as it dissolves in water quite well. Dichlor has cyanuric acid added during production to stabilize the material so it stays around up to 6 hours in direct sunlight.
Sodium Trichlor (Trichlor) is the most widely used form of chlorine for swimming pools. Almost always sold in the form of tablets or sticks Trichlor provides 90 percent available chlorine. This is the highest percentage available which makes this type of chlorine the most cost effective. One 3 inch Trichlor tablet provides nearly seven times as much chlorine as a 4 gallon case of bleach. The formed product is ideal for automatic feeders and because it is also stabilized Trichlor will stay around for a while. Like its cousin Dichlor, Trichlor will not affect pH nearly as much as other products. Trichlor is also ideal for feeders because it requires flowing water to dissolve.
Each of these types of chlorine, except bleach, has its place in keeping pools clean and sanitary. Knowing the characteristics of each will help save money, time and effort caring for a swimming pool.

Swimming Pools - Let's Get Wet
?Beverly Hills. Swimming pools. Movie stars.?
That line from the theme song of the 70?s sitcom ?The Beverly Hillbillies? shows us how far we have come in relation to swimming pools. Swimming pools were a real status symbol back then. Now nearly everyone has access to at least one, if not in their own backyard, at least at the local YMCA or gym.
We take swimming pools for granted. If you are reading this article on the internet, you probably have a lifestyle that would admit you to not just one, but any of several swimming pools almost any time you?d like. Either your apartment complex has one or your friend does or you go to the local city pool. What a luxury!
It wasn?t so long ago when running water alone was a luxury for only the very rich. Now we build concrete lined holes in the ground and swim around in it!
Did you ever read ?Stranger in a Strange Land?? or ?Dune?? In Heinlein?s classic science fiction novel, ?Stranger in a Strange Land,? the Martian, Mike, is just blown away by the fact that people swim in water. He loves it. Frank Herbert?s ?Dune? is the story of a desert planet so dry that even perspiration is recycled through a suit that everyone must wear. To collect water in a pool is an unthinkable decadence.
But in our swimming pools, be they backyard or public, we filter the water, we chlorinate it to prevent algae and we clean the pool weekly or more to keep it clear and sparkling. That?s a far cry from the country watering hole or stream where you didn?t know what you?d find swimming next to you. Yes, those old-fashioned swimming holes have their charm, but I?ll take my sparkly clean water any day, thank you!

Swimming Pool Safety For Children
A swimming pool in the yard can be very fun and a great time for the family. But, It can also be very dangerous for children. If possible, do not put a swimming pool in your yard until your children are at least older than 5 years. But if you already have a pool, or plan to get one make sure to follow all the safety measures to keep everybody happy and safe.
The fist rule and most important, never ever leave your children alone in or near the pool, even for a moment. All it takes is a moment for a child to fall in the pool and possibly drown. So remember if the phone rings or you must go back in the house always bring the child or children with you! Children are super fast, a lot can happen in 5 seconds time.
You should always keep rescue equipment (such as a shepherd's hook or life preserver) and a telephone by the pool. These few items near by the pool could save your child or anybody else for that matter. The hook will help you reach out to someone in the pool quickly. Use the phone for further assistance if needed.
You should consider putting up a fence to separate your house from the pool. Most young children who drown in pools wander out of the house and fall into the pool without the parents ever knowing until it?s too late! Install a fence at least 3-4 feet high around all 4 sides of the pool. This fence will completely separate the pool from the house and the backyard. Use gates that are self-closing and self-latching, with latches higher than your children's reach. I know this may sound a bit much, but if you have very young children it?s well worth it.
Regardless if you have children or not, anyone around a pool should learn CPR and be able to rescue a child or person if needed. Stay within an arm's length of your child at all times. Just In case something is to happen, you can react in seconds. Seconds will be the difference between life and death!
Never leave old toys in the pool area. Remove all toys from the pool after use so children aren't tempted to reach for them. This is important because children will miss there toys and go hunting for them right into the pool.
And just remember after the children are done swimming; secure the pool so they can't get back into it. For more safety information or products visit www.safetyrus.com

Is Your Business . . . 'swimming with the fishes'
Is Your Business . . . 'swimming with the fishes'
If your online business is desperately trying to stay afloat, it may be that you need a few pointers to set your business back on course. Often times it's not what you're doing as much as how you are doing it.
Online business is quite the rave and rightfully so, but to actually succeed at your online business you may need to see what it takes to be successful, no matter what business field you are in. First and foremost is establishing a customer base. Knowing who will be interested in your business is paramount in focusing on who you anticipate doing business with you.
To merely broadcast to the world, "Hey, I've opened an online store!" is like standing on a mountaintop and shouting that you've fallen and you can't get up. Chances of someone hearing you are slim and anyone who does probably won't respond.
You may have the next big hit or you just want your share on the market in your area of expertise, that's great, but focusing on your audience is more important than how impressive your site appeals to the viewer. There are so many webmasters, merchants, and business owners that miss this step as the ultimate focal point. It's too easy to get caught up in design, layout, and eye appeal that you miss the most important things, customers.
Consumers actually drive the wheels of any business. If it doesn't reach them in their way of thinking, your business won't fly. In order to focus properly on your main ingredient, customers, you need to know secondly where do you find them. I know it sounds a little backward from most of the things you've read about and heard, but "build it and they will come" does not apply in business like it does for a baseball field.
So the illusive question is where to find your customers. To share a key factor in your quest for customers, you must first trigger their curiosity, make them want to know, solve a nagging problem, or shock them with what they can do.
Do you see that all of these suggestions have the customer's perspective and not your business? It's how you separate slump from success. Oh, you could always drop your prices, but that can only last a short while, if your products deserve the consumers attention, they'll pay the price you demand. Don't go about your pricing backward, demand your price and sell. How many times have you worked as or seen salesmen be told to push the product and the price? Who wants to buy from a pushy salesman? Which salesman always makes his quota? It's the smart ones that sell by looking from the consumer's eyes.
Spend the time researching why the consumer wants your product or business and you'll be able to turn your failing business around in record time. Are you targeting the right group, the right audience? Or are you fishing in the ocean with a single minnow? In most cases it's the single minnow logic and you simply must focus on your audience and what they expect to receive from you. The pricing, the glitz and the glamour of your website are feel goods after the purchase, it's the need to know and the satisfaction of solving the consumers' needs that makes your business successful.
Spend some time in your favorite search engine, (I prefer Google), and search for similar products or businesses that your business falls into and you'll then want to search questions about the business or product. For example if you sell socks, type in a question about footwear, low-rise socks, sports socks, etc. then you'll quickly see that successful merchants are targeting the customers' needs and they have followed the right path by solving the consumers search for answers.
If you need a quick and helpful boost to a process that is working in real time or you need a supplement to your existing business, I think you'll find this direct and concise tool my beneficial.

How to Repair Swimming Hair Damage
Copyright 2006 Roger Hall
Chlorine and Your Hair
Imagine your hair as a sponge absorbing water. Before you get in the pool, wet your hair with fresh water. With non-chlorinated water on board, your hair won't be able to soak-up as much chlorine while you swim. And always rinse your hair with clean water after swimming; chlorine in pools not only dries-out your hair, but will fade the colour too.
Chlorine in swimming pools can cause sebum - oil that lubricates your hair shaft - to start building up in your hair follicles. As time passes follicles can become blocked, creating further hair damage. After Swimming use a good 'clarifying' shampoo. The main ingredient to look for is EDTA (Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic Acid). It?s like a chemical claw, removing chlorine from your hair.
Baking soda is a wonderfully inexpensive home remedy. Shampoo as usual, but add ? cup baking soda to your shampoo. Using this mixture once a week can remove water impurities and lighten your hair. Also consider mixing baking soda with hair conditioner in your hand to condition the ends of your hair. It?ll give your hair more volume, body and health.
Protect Your Hair from the Inside
Drinking plenty of water every day is a good way to lubricate damaged or excessively dry hair. Other liquids such as herbal teas and fruit juices also help. Be moderate in your use of coffee and colas, as they can cause dehydration to your hair and skin.
A healthy diet and recommended use of vitamins will help the overall health of your hair by providing a boost of minerals and nutrients. Besides feeding hair with vitamins, minerals and amino acids you can crank up the moisture by adding daily Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) supplements. Flax Seed is reported to be a great EFA that softens a woman?s hair and skin.
Be Gentle
Don't mangle your hair by brushing it when wet. Instead, comb it with a wide-tooth comb. Work out tangles as you move from the ends toward the scalp. Don't over dry - leave some moisture in to prevent static. Use care when styling. Your hair will be better-off if you don't use styling appliances; but if you must, don?t let your hair get too hot and avoid aggressive manipulation of your hair.
Hats Best to Stop Damaging Rays
UV-radiation from the sun can damage your hair, fading colour and making it brittle. Although some hair care products claim they contain sun protection, wearing a hat or cap around the pool or beach to is the simplest, most effective way to look after your hair.
Deep Conditioning Hair Treatments
If you already have damaged hair, perhaps it?s time for intensive treatment to turn the tide for your bruised hair cuticles. Whether you whip up your own recipe, go to your favourite salon or buy an off-the-shelf product, you may need to perform intensive conditioning at least once a week.
Salon treatments are more expensive and usually involve the application of a healing hair masque or deep conditioning product to return your hair to its natural, healthy appearance.
Keep these tips in mind next time you?re at the pool or beach. With a little care and know-how, you can maintain great-looking hair while enjoying the benefits of outdoor exercise.
